discord, riot games down with reported cloudflare outage

Discord and Riot Games services appear to be part of a reported Cloudflare server outage that’s taken down a number of websites and applications Friday afternoon.

“Users are currently having trouble disconnecting to Discord due to an upstream internet issue,” Discord tweeted from its official account. “We’ve got all engineers on deck investigating the issue.”

In subsequent tweets, Discord representatives on Twitter said it appeared to be “a Cloudflare issue” that’s also impacting other parts of the internet. Cloudflare is a DDoS protection provider. Shortly after services went offline, Cloudflare tweeted that it’s “aware that some regions may be experiencing issues with some Cloudflare services” and are “currently investigating.” It a post on its website, Cloudflare said the “issue has been identified and a fix is being implemented.”

Valorant developer Riot Games also tweeted that it’s “aware of service outages affecting games of VALORANT (among other things).” Patreon, Phoenix Labs’ DauntlessMedium, and many other services appear to be affected.

At the time of writing, some services appear to be coming back online.

Update, 7:15 p.m. EDT: All services appear to be back online. A Cloudflare spokesperson sent the following statement to Polygon:

This afternoon we saw an outage across some parts of our network. It was not as a result of an attack. It appears a router on our global backbone announced bad routes and caused some portions of the network to not be available. We believe we have addressed the root cause and monitoring systems for stability now.
